The first few miles are heavily wooded with a bit of an incline, but the trail continues to Continental Falls with 360-degree views.

The entire trail is beautiful, but the waterfall and views at the end of this 6.2-mile hike are fabulous and well worth the trip. This trail is well-traveled, so hiking it solo does not feel like you’re alone in the wilderness. I like being in the middle of nowhere, but sometimes it’s nice knowing there are people nearby.

The trail is well maintained and easy to navigate, until you arrive closer to Continental Falls. On my first time on the trail, it took a few minutes of wandering to figure out exactly how to get to the falls. I recommend bringing a map if it’s your first time. Start early and head back with plenty of daylight remaining, or carry a light source.

The Spruce Creek Trail is also a great trail to run. The trail isn’t flat; it always feels like you’re going up or down, but nothing is super steep until the very end at the waterfall.

Like all trails in Colorado, be prepared for wildlife. I saw my first black bear on the main road into Breckenridge about a half mile from the Spruce Creek trailhead. Moose and mountain lions are certainly around.

I carry my standard CO hiking gear on all hikes in CO, which always includes bear spray and a large knife.

For a list of hiking gear, check out my blog titled How to Hike in the Mountains without getting Lost or Dying.

Here are 10 Reasons to hike the Spruce Creek Trail:

1. You’re Outside In Nature

Not only are you outside in nature while hiking the Spruce Creek Trail, but you’re also outside in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, one of the most stunning mountain ranges in the United States.

And you don’t have to hike 13 miles to reach the highest point on this trail or scramble across boulders; it’s a relatively straightforward 6-ish miles to the bottom of the waterfall. The waterfall is roughly 300 feet, and the trail to the top is steep. It’s walkable, but in a few sections I put my hand down, and it briefly felt like scrambling.

Be careful on that last section heading toward the top of the waterfall; it can become dangerous if you’re not careful. While this hike isn’t difficult, that last little section is closer to bouldering in a few spots. I’d consider this a moderate hike because it’s over 12 miles roundtrip and that last section can be a bit sketchy. The views make this hike well worth it!

2. Mental Health Benefits

Is there anything better for your mental health than spending time outside in nature? I’ve always loved the outdoors; even a little park in the city is fun and rewarding.

But the Rocky Mountains are truly stunning. Moving our body is just as good for our mental health as it is for our physical health, and I’m a huge proponent of getting outside as often as possible.

Spending even a little time outside each day has benefits and can make a huge difference for many people, but hikes like these are especially fun and rewarding. Just being outside is nice, but the added benefit of moving physically, along with the stunning views, is what really makes this hike special.

3. Physical Health Benefits

We all know the benefits of moving our bodies, and hiking lets us do just that: move. I’m a huge proponent of finding what works for each individual’s likes and personality.

Whether it’s pickleball, walking in your neighborhood, running, cycling, playing basketball, gardening… or anything that gets us up and moving is a good thing.

Anything that gets us outside and off our phone is a positive. Anything that allows us to breathe fresh air while moving can be very helpful, and hiking in the mountains is excellent for that. Of all the neat reasons to live in Colorado or travel there for vacation, fresh air and lush alpine forests are at the top of that list.

4. Maintained Trail

I’ve been on hundreds and hundreds of trails. Spruce Creek is a great trail with a little bit of everything. This hike has inclines, declines, roots, creeks, bridges, lakes, waterfalls, old cabin remnants, alpine tundra, lush forest, and more.

The trail is marked and generally easy to navigate; however, a couple of spots could disorient you if you’re not careful. While the trail is well maintained, a couple of places have multiple trails merging.

This is a trail where someone not paying attention could get lost or disoriented, so bring a map or have a good sense of direction. The Continental Divide isn’t far away, and there are dozens of mountains in the Breckenridge and Alma, CO area, with 5 official 14ers.

5. Great Location and Parking

This is good and bad. The trailhead is just off Highway 9 as you head south out of downtown Breckenridge, so it’s easy to reach, which also makes it a popular choice on Saturday mornings.

I highly recommend arriving early at the trailhead on popular days, like the weekends. Not everyone wants to get up early to park by 6:30 am, but trust me, you’ll be glad you did. Parking on the street instead of in a parking lot isn’t that bad if you want to sleep in.

I’ve hiked this trail several times and never had a problem parking. If you want a spot right at the trailhead, get there early.

6. You’re Not Alone; Other Hikers are Nearby

Spruce Creek is a convenient, well-maintained trail, so there are almost always other hikers out there. As much as I like being alone in nature, sometimes it’s nice to hike alone while knowing others are out there too.

Every time I hiked Spruce Creek, there were always the perfect number of other hikers on the trail, and I never found it too busy. That’s the neat part about Breckenridge and many other ski towns during the off-season (summer and early fall): it’s usually just the right number of people.

I spent a year living and working in the Breckenridge area. Winter is always fun and pretty, but summer and fall are incredible, and surprisingly not as busy as winter. A local told me that most winters he wonders why he lives in the mountains, then summer arrives and he’s reminded.

Summers are fantastic, especially if you’re like me and like it when temperatures stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit or below. This well-traveled trail is easy to reach, has minimal elevation gain, and ends with jaw-dropping views.

7. Abundant Wildlife: Moose, Black Bears, and Mountain Lions

I saw my first black bear about 1/4 mile away from the Spruce Creek trailhead, and it was awesome! When I lived in Colorado, I saw elk daily and moose at least once a week.

I’ve come across moose many times while hiking and never had a problem, but that doesn’t really mean anything. Everyone I knew who lived in Colorado would advise that moose are the most likely encounter while hiking and the most likely to charge you or be dangerous.

If you’re hiking in Colorado, you are among many large, possibly dangerous animals and should be prepared to have an encounter. That being said, most animals smell humans and want to get out of the way. My views on animals while hiking are to always expect an encounter and know what you would do in each scenario.

In 2023, a moose attacked a hiker in Boulder, causing significant injuries. Three years after the attack, Chris Ray stated she doesn’t hold any animosity against moose, although she won’t hike that trail alone anymore.

Like most outdoorsmen, hikers, and trail runners, I love animals and enjoy seeing animals in the wild. I have great respect for wild animals and try to be as prepared as possible when on the trail.

There’s a risk of a dangerous encounter, and I’m usually willing to take that risk because, to me, the benefits far outweigh the risks. Not everyone has the same views, and that’s okay. Life is short, and there’s no better way to spend my time than being out in the mountains, woods, and trees with nature.

Some people may think possible animal encounters are a negative, but I think they’re a benefit. We hear about bad encounters on the news and social media, but how many animal encounters happen each day with zero issues? I can’t tell you that number, but I can tell you it’s huge.

8. Neat Old Cabin Remains

As you start the hike to the top of the waterfall, where the incline increases significantly, you’ll see remnants of a couple of old log cabins, and they’re very cool. Whoever lived there had amazing views and loved the mountains.

It’s neat to see these old log cabins, even as remnants. I always wonder what the people who lived there were like and how they enjoyed living there.

One cabin in the area, close to Continental Falls, is the Continental Cabin. According to Backpacker Magazine and UtahTrails.com, the Continental Cabin was built in 1883 and is an historic shelter.

This area of the trail and the falls is really neat, with these old cabins and views, and both are well worth the hike.

9. Gorgeous Waterfall: Continental Falls

Continental Falls is amazing and much bigger than I imagined the first time I hiked this trail. It reminded me of Yosemite Falls. Yosemite Falls is bigger, but the Continental Falls have a similar feel.

Continental Falls is the largest waterfall in the area, and you can get close at several points while staying safe. The elevation is about 11,000 feet at the base and about 12,150 at the top. Anywhere along the waterfall can be very dangerous, so please be careful.

Watch your footing and go slow. I’ve heard too many stories about hikers falling into Yosemite Falls or at the Grand Canyon… a quick Google search will bring up plenty of those stories.

I want people to get outside, be in nature, hike, and have a good time; I don’t want people getting hurt or dying.

10. Stunning Mountain Top Views

Few trails have endings better than the Spruce Creek Trail. While Colorado has tons of amazing trails and mountaintop views, this one ranks among the best. The views from every mountaintop in the Breckenridge area are spectacular.

The Continental Divide runs right through this area and crosses Highway 9 at Hoosier Pass. The Continental Divide, the Spruce Creek Trail, and the Continental Falls are all in the same general area, and the views are stunning.

Each trail and area of Colorado has its own unique vegetation, views, and experience, and this one is as good as any in the Rocky Mountains. And it’s a relatively short hike for the views.

Want to skip the hike? Park at Hoosier Pass and within five minutes of walking, you’ll have amazing views!

But… If you hike the Spruce Creek Trail, you’ll also get the added benefit of a workout.

Conclusion

While there are tons of reasons to hike, these 10 reasons are why I love the Spruce Creek Trail so much.

If you live in the Breckenridge area or plan to vacation there in the summer or early fall, check out the Spruce Creek Trail. You won’t be disappointed. It’s one of my favorites in this part of Colorado for these 10 reasons.

Plan and be prepared for animal encounters and potentially dangerous weather conditions. There’s always potential danger in the wild and in the mountains. Stay alert, listen to your gut, and turn around if you aren’t feeling it.

Always do your own research before heading out on a new trail and be confident you have a good idea of what’s ahead.

Stay safe and have fun!

You’ll find gorgeous views while hiking the Spruce Creek Trail in Breckenridge, CO.
